Asbestos Survey

asbestos risk assessment

Hereford Safety Environmental can carry out three different types of asbestos survey on your establishment based on the Asbestos: The Survey Guide. The type of survey required will differ based on the business in question, the building and the presumed urgency of the situation.

If you think you require an asbestos survey, call 0800 085 7112 and talk to our asbestos removal experts or use our contact page to email us.

Type 1: Location and assessment survey (presumptive survey)

The first type of survey defers the need to sample for asbestos until major rebuilding work is carried out on the building such as a demolition or refurbishment.

  • Locating in reasonably practicable areas, the presence and extent of any suspect ACM’s in the building.
  • The duty holder to bear any additional costs of management for some non-asbestos-containing materials.
  • All reasonably practical areas are inspected and presumed to contain asbestos.
  • All materials which could contain asbestos, will be presumed to contain asbestos.
  • All these materials are assessed for potential fibre release.

Type 2: Standard sampling, identification and assessment survey (sampling survey)

The purpose and procedures used in this second type of survey are the same as for Type 1, except that the samples are collected and analysed for the presence of asbestos.

  • Locating in reasonably practicable areas, the presence and extent of any suspect ACM’s in the building.
  • Samples from each type of suspect ACM found are collected and analysed to confirm or refute the surveyor’s judgement.
  • If the material is found to contain asbestos, other similar materials used similarly in the building are strongly presumed to contain asbestos.
  • Less homogeneous materials will require a more samples before the surveyor assesses if asbestos is or is not present.
  • Sampling may take place simultaneously with the survey or carried out seperately after the Type 1 survey is complete.

Type 3: Full access sampling and identification survey (pre-demolition/major refurbishment survey)

The final type of survey is much more in-depth and is used in more dangerous and cases where asbestos presence is highly suspected. The survey is designed to be used as a basis for the removal of ACMs prior to demolition or major refurbishment of the builiding.

  • Locate and describe, as far as reasonably practicable, all ACMs in the building.
  • Use of destructive inspection as necessary to gain access to all areas.
  • A full sampling programme is undertaken to identify possible ACMs.
  • The survey does not assess the condition, surface treatment or accessibility of the asbestos or provide material risk assessments for potential fibre release.
  • Estimates of the quantities of ACMs are made.
